Following atrail of rose petals, it was a Valentine’s Day like never before.

‘You’ve done all of this?’ Ibeamed up at my boyfriend Cain, 27, as he stood holding abouquet.

Always treating me with gifts throughout the year, Cain was everything Ihad ever wanted.

Meeting through mutual friends back in November 2019, when Iwas just 18, I’d fallen head over heels.

Charming, kind and considerate, our relationship blossomed naturally.

My parents John, now 60, and Julie, now 54, approved of Cain, too.

At times you could see the temper in his eyes

They looked at him like ason.

And my best friend got on well with him, too.

Which meant that everything progressed quite quickly for us.

Cain moved in with me at my parents’ house, just before lockdown started in 2020. And everything was great. Over the space of three years, we’d had weekends away, been to Mexico together and had even spoken about the idea of starting a family, too.

However, like all couples, we had our ups and downs.

Normally timid in character, Cain was quite shy and reserved.

He wouldn’t raise his voice, we would just have occasional spats about silly and petty things around the house.

Which only heightened when we decided to move into our own place in November 2022.

With Mum and Dad owning afew properties, we were renting the place from them.

‘I can’t find anything in this bloody place,’ Cain would snap.

And when he was looking for something, he’d turn the whole house upside down, throwing things around.

At times, his temper really was unbearable.

Aboxer in the past, he’d punch doors if he didn’t get his own way.

This side to Cain was aworld away from the shy and reserved guy Iknew.

His face would change, he’d go white and you could see the temper in his eyes.

I felt like Iwas treading on eggshells all of the time –I didn’t want to set him off.

‘I’m not so sure on him,’ my friends warned. ‘But you won’t listen as you're in love,’ they scoffed.

Yes, they were right and Cain would get angry, especially when drinking.

However, he’d always know how to make things right.

Everything was perfect

‘I’m sorry, I will change. I’ll get help,’ he’d apologise.

Plus, when Cain had decided to treat us to ameal out at a bistro in town for Valentine’s Day last year, I couldn’t wait.

It was afew days early on Saturday 11 February, but it meant that we’d have achance to have more drinks after.

As the bistro was a 30-minute car jour
