Standing in the bustling room, Iwaved to our prospective employees.

‘Come on in,’ I smiled, ushering them inside.

We were hosting ataster day for 20 young people last year, who were doing athreeweek placement within the NHS, so they could meet their prospective employers.

And at the end of the placement, 10 lucky young people would be offered ajob.

Only, as the event was rounding up, one student just stood out.

‘I’ve never felt wanted like this before,’ he told me.

Almost every employer had offered him ajob –all before he’d started the placement!

His charisma and enthusiasm worked acharm.

I want everyone to feel wanted

He’d never had along-term job since leaving education, yet now, all the service leads were fighting for him!

Iwas full of pride, too, as Iplayed aspecial part in helping him secure his future.

Joining the Step into the NHS program as part of The Prince’s Trust in 2020, Ibecame amentor to help young people kickstart their future careers.

I’d been working in the NHS for 40 years in healthcare science, so Iknew what it takes to land arole –from the interviewing process down to crafting an application.

Maybe Ican help people get into arole like mine, I thought. So, Ibecame aprogram leader for The Prince’s Trust. Mentoring young people one-to-one, Iwalked them through every step of the application process.
