COLLECTOR REAL LIFE

YOU’VE GOTTA SING!

When Euan Robertson, 37, from Livingston, discovered a collection from his childhood, he didn’t realise how much it would spice up his life…

Proud as punch
My goodie bag!

Cracking open my 20th can of Diet Pepsi, anyone would have thought that I was a pop addict.

However, at just 11 years old, back in 1997, I wasn’t after the hit of bubbles.

I had a bigger task in hand. Pepsi had a promotion which meant that if you collected 20 pink ring pulls from their cans, you could send them away to collect a prize.

In return, you’d get a limited-edition CD of the Spice Girls’ single Step to Me.

Admittedly, I wasn’t really the biggest Spice Girls fan. They weren’t a guilty 46 pleasure of mine, but I did have a poster of them all at one point on my bedroom wall, like most boys my age.

I now giggle every time I buy a Pepsi

But it was more just the idea of being able to collect an exclusive CD instead.

Especially as me and my friends could all have a go at the challenge, too.

Only, as they all sent off their pink collections, I’d forgotten to do so.

After all that effort, I’d only gone and missed the final posting date!

And over the years, even though I still loved to pick up a Pepsi every now and then, I’d forgotten about it all entirely. That was until November last year came around.

Asking my parents to sift through a bunch of my old toys, I wanted to introduce my daughter, now four, to my LEGO collection.

When we started rifling through the LEGO bricks, that’s when I spotted the bright pink metal ring pulls.

I know exactly what these are, I thought, recognising them immediately.

And that’s when I had a brilliant idea.

I’m going to try and test my luck, I thought.

I never sent these away to claim Step to Me. Is there any chance you have any lying around? I typed, contacting Pepsi on X, previously known as Twitter.

It was a real blast from the past, so I was never really expecting a reply.

We’re not sure if we have any left in the archives, Pepsi responde
