Face five in

It is all too easy to become stuck in a rut with your hairstyle, skincare routine and style of makeup. Things that have served you well and looked great in the past perhaps could benefit from small (or large) tweaks. Reinvention or change may be an exciting prospect to some but to others, myself included, it may be very daunting.

Never feel you need to justify a change, but perhaps try to understand why. Visualise how you would like to look; find inspiration from others while setting realistic goals. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get it right the first time, just enjoy the process.

It isn’t so much about changing who you are, more about embracing what you feel the best version of yourself looks like at this stage in your life. A fresh hairstyle or colour change can be incredibly uplifting and boost your confidence. It doesn’t however have to be all big, bold statements – try these simple changes to reap the rewards.

● SWAP your natural lip shade for a bolder one – it may seem a small step, but watch the life it brings to the face.

● REPLACE drying powder-based products with cream ones, which will add a youthful glow to the face.

● APPLY your blusher or contour a little higher up on the cheek bones than when in our 30s.

● CHECK your skincare products are working harder for you by offering lots of hydration. You could even add a serum into your routine.

● TRY applying your product with new tools – a brush in place of a sponge for example. Also, look at how you store your toiletries – an open-flat make-up bag is a game-changer for me when in a hurry and I avoid scrambling around looking for eye and lip pencils.

● AVOID expensive mistakes! After the age of 50 my body reacted differently to fragrances that I’d used for the last 20 years – they smelled completely different on me. So it’s good to try small samples, or go in store to test scents before you purchase the larger size.
