I personally believe you should strive to achieve great hair, not great hair “for your age”. Forget about out-dated sayings and statements, just be yourself. If you’ve always been adventurous with cut and colour, carry on. Equally, it’s never too late to make a bold change. After all, it’s only hair which will grow back.

That said, your hair may have its own agenda. It can start to become dry, brittle, thin, or more coarse in texture, or even change to curly! Of course, greying colour may make it harder to keep the style you love.

Results will always be better if you work in harmony with your hair and its evolving texture, rather than against it. Just 10 minutes with the right product and a little knowledge can completely transform your hairstyle. Look for products that not only deliver the end result you require, i.e. volume, shine etc, but importantly, match your hair texture (coarse, frizzy, limp etc).

Before you start to style your hair, make a plan how you want it to look and stick to it. Always allow hair to dry 80 per cent before applying product and starting to style, this not only stops the product being diluted but makes it easier and quicker to achieve your finished look.

Most hair cuts can be versatile – ask your hair dresser to show or talk you though some alternative ways to style your hair. A small shift from what you normally do can transform your look. I find in most cases there are at least five different ways to style a hair cut.

It’s trial and error when it comes to finding the right products and which regime delivers styles that work for you. Today’s hair has an ease to it. Gone, thankfully, are the hard-set finishes to hairstyles, replaced by more natural movement and shine. Hair looks and feels like hair.

Finally, don’t neglect scalp health. Remove build-up of products with a scalp scrub and once in a while give your scalp a massage to release tension and increase blood circulation, promoting better hair health.
