‘I worked as a chambermaid at Champneys Tring in the late 1970s’

‘How fascinating to see behind the scenes of Champneys Tring in your March issue. My sister and I were on the other side of the green baize door in the late 1970s, when we spent a summer university vacation there, employed as chambermaids. Unlike the guests, whose days began with a cup of hot water flavoured with a slice of lemon, we enjoyed a full English breakfast in the staff canteen. Then we got to work, starting with dusting and polishing the magnificent mahogany staircase in the original mansion before moving on to the bedrooms and bathrooms allocated to us. Occasionally there were rumours about the arrival of a famous guest, but we were so busy during our shifts that we never saw them. However, the tips left by departing guests were usually generous and helped us save towards the following year’s academic studies. I trained as a surveyor and, in my property management days, the skills I learnt at Champneys stood me in good stead when negotiating cleaning contracts for buildings as well as checking standards. Recently retired, I should put a return visit to Champneys Tring on my wish list, but this time I’m ready to be pampered!’

Robin, via email

Dear Robin, what a lovely email and a lovely memory of your time at Champneys! Thank you for sharing that. I think Champneys ought to let you have a free night of pampering considering all the hard work you put in during your working life (hint hint, if they’re reading this)! I’m hoping to visit too as I got to go to Champneys Henlow Grange back in my newspaper days, but I haven’t been to any of their other six locations. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!’ Katy, Editor-in-Chief.
