The Last Of Us season two is in production, set to air 2025

Actor Bella Ramsey reprises the role of Ellie. Is the scrappy survivor staring down friend or foe here, though?

Uh, should we kick off this news piece witha spoiler warning? Or simply ask the question ‘If you haven’t played either of the Last Of Us games or watched the first series of the television adaptation, then why are you reading this?’ Joking aside, the second series of the show starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey is currently in production ahead of an air date set for sometime in 2025.

HBO ordered a second series less than two weeks after the first season’s 2023 debut, with that initial run of nine episodes going on to win eight Emmy awards plus three Golden Globes. Talk about a tough act to follow.

The second series is set to build on the first series’ success, welcoming newcomers Kaitlyn Dever as Abby and Isabela Merced as Dina to its established cast. While the second series will be an adaptation of The Last Of Us Part II, it won’t be exactly the same as the story you remember. Like the first series, Joel and Ellie’s return will expand on the game’s key beats, giving character moments and ensuing tragedy plenty of room to breathe.

REVISITING REVENGE

Warner Bros Discovery issued the first images of season two at its recent Upfront presentation in New York. These show a definitely older Joel with twinkly lights reminiscent of the game’s barn dance flashback in the background, and a focussed Ellie putting her rifle skills to work.

Craig Mazin, who also created massively popular TV miniseries Chernobyl, returns to co-lead the show alongside Neil Druckmann, the game’s creative director and lead co-writer.
