Speeding RIB

Aboat owner who drove a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) around 18 knots–almost three times the speed limit –in Falmouth’s inner harbour on a busy summer’s day has been ordered to pay £3,061 in fines and costs by Magistrates in Truro, Cornwall.

David Morgan, aged 51, of Lawn Drive, Chudleigh, Newton Abbot, pleaded guilty to navigating a RIB over the speed limit, unnecessarily navigating through moorings and failing to navigate with care and caution during the incident in July 2023. Footage from the harbour’s new high-definition CCTV system, which aided prosecution for the first time, showed Morgan using his mobile phone, not using a kill-cord or wearing a lifejacket.

Brixham’s maritime community is in shock following the death of Colin Mawbey, aged 61, who was the charity chairman and a boat skipper of Vigilance of Brixham.

Colin had been associated with Vigilance for more than 11 years, starting as crew before rising through the ranks but he once observed: “We all start as novices and the wise ones still claim to be novices at the end.”

Acting chairman of the trustees, Peter Milligan, said: “Colin was a popular skipper bringing a unique blend of skilland humour to the role. He built p enormous experience on Vigilance and was a regular sight around the harbour. His untimely death came as a shock to everyone and he is sorely missed.”

Colin leaves behind his wife Deb, children Chris, Antonia, Simon and granddaughter Addilyn whom he adored.

Bayside Marine Chandlery, Torbay, is up for sale.

Teresa Louth, who established the business in 1998 with her father, David Becconsall, said she would like to see it continue: “I have made the very difficult decision, after 26 years, to close the shop and online business permanently. Three large ‘Tilly’ lamps, a model boat and several model engines were among 11 exhibits stolen from the Nationa” Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.

The Canal &River Trust team said the items were removed sometime between 9 and 12 February. Part of the museum was closed while a security review was completed.
