MODELS DIDN’T HAVE to be fully new to make it onto the shortlist for our PC Awards last year, they could just be substantially altered from the previous season.

That was certainly the case with Coachman’s Laser 665. This reworked model, and in particular its newly expanded washroom, so impressed our judges, they awarded it the Best Family Caravan title.

Pitch and set-up

The 665 is a standard Laser, so it only has a conventional width. But it still comes with twin axles. They should provide you with a much more comfortable tow, as should the ATC system fitted as standard. The silver grey sidewalls and svelte profile will also look stylish on the road.

The Laser comes with external lockers on the front nearside and on both sides at the rear, so it shouldn’t take long to unload all of your outdoor furniture.

Lounge

Even with an extended washroom, the 665’s lounge is generous. There is easily room for six to sit here, despite the large fold-out extension taking up some offside settee space. The shelf that pulls out from the central chest is enough for drinks, but for something more substantial, the table is stored close by in its dedicated space by the door, also providing a handy space where you can leave keys and fobs. The TV mount and sockets are just above. You’ll find USB ports among the sockets, too.

The large sunroof adds to the daylight streaming in through the windows, while you also benefit from four spotlights and ambient lighting stretching to the front.

The extra-wide sill up front includes a wireless phone-charging pad and should provide more space for tea and books.

Kitchen

The large fold-out extension on the left of the side kitchen is conveniently close to two sockets, so there should be plenty of space for a kettle and a toaster here.

The big sink cover could also work as a separate chopping board. The area is well lit by striplights below the overhead locker and microwave, and LEDs in front.

The four-burner dual-fuel hob has a domestic-style trivet and its own extractor fan, above the oven and grill. Across the aisle, ventilated by a rooflight, is a two-way opening fridge with a separate freezer.

Washroom

Walk through to the central washroom and you might need to remind yourself you are in a caravan, not an upmarket hotel – it is that large. Where previous editions of this van included a compact circular shower cubicle on the nearside next to the basin, this time, you get a rectangula
