Bailey’s great African adventure reached the edges of the Sahara

BAILEY OF BRISTOL has completed the trek to the outskirts of the Sahara Desert that it was forced to abandon when the pandemic first struck, three years ago.

A team from the Bristol manufacturer and other participants took two Bailey Phoenix+ 642 models, towed by Ford Rangers, and a Bailey motorhome, from the ‘World’s End’, Sagres in southern Portugal, through Spain and across the Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco. They then visited Fez, Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aït Benhaddou, and drove through the Dadès Gorge, before reaching the edge of the Sahara Desert and then returning home.

Bailey MD Nick Howard, a team member, said, “To bring the caravans and motorhome here on tour and see how they performed in the real world is vital. There are many things we’ve learned along the way, but overall, the products have held up exceptionally well.” Sahara Challenge Take 2, p48

Caravan insurance company Ripe is warning caravanners to make sure they are fully covered on the road this summer, after revealing the average cost of a claim it receives for damage sustained while towing is £4027.

Ripe founder John Woosey said, “Confusion around towing rules is commonplace, and many get caught out. We would urge caravanners to read up on the finer details of their insurance.”
