Germany has its bierkellers, France its bistros, Spain its bodegas and the US its sports bars, but for the UK, it’s always been the humble pub. From the coast to the hill ranges and moors, from huge cities to tiny villages, inns are ubiquitous throughout the land, but they’re far from alike. As proven by this wide-ranging selection, there are some true outliers, offering something beyond the staples expected of any pub worth its salt(ed peanuts). We’ve also identified great sites to stay at. 1 The Square & Compass

This hardy tavern on a bluff overlooking the English Channel has been serving ale since 1776, to everyone from smugglers to Nobel laureates. Positioned on the world-renowned Jurassic Coast, on a section infamous for its steep inclines, it’s now a much-loved pitstop for ramblers. Offering a range of local beers and ciders (served through a hatch), food options consist solely of homemade pasties and pies, but the humble fare never fails to hit the spot. What makes this inn unique, though, is its own mini museum, packed with fossils (such as ammonites and ichthyosaurs) and ancient artefacts (such as flint tools and Roman coins), all unearthed from the surrounding area.

2 Bittles Bar BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND

Housed in what has to be one of Belfast’s most distinctively shaped buildings and located near bustling Victoria Square, it’s not difficult to spot this place.

As you’d suspect from the narrow edifice, the space inside is tight, but really, it’s well worth breathing in for.

If it’s not too busy, take the opportunity to browse the vast collection of paintings that adorns the walls, including portraits of famous artists, writers, politicians and other notable historical figures.
