HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

Sixty years of the MGB celebrated at big Gaydon gathering

Where you at this great big event?

The most beloved of British sports cars, the MGB, has celebrated its 60th anniversary in style with a spectacular bash at the British Motor Museum, Gaydon. More than 1200 MGBs and 2500 visitors from all over the UK and as far afield as Australia and the USA attended the event, which was organised jointly by the MGB Register of the MG Car Club and the MG Owners Club.

Forming the centrepiece of the event, the museum’s frontage played host to an impressive and informative display put together by Andrew Vigor. A timeline of specially selected MGBs lined up to represent each year of production, enabling visitors to see the evolution of the car, from its conception in 1962, all the way through an eventful life to the end of production in 1980.

Lead organiser Graham Dix told PC: ‘Planning for MGB 60 began over two years ago. Rare and interesting MGBs were located for the displays from all over the UK and Europe. The final line up amounted to around eighty display cars. These included several rare race and rally cars, Jacques Coune, and a replica Aston Martin MGB, amongst an array of top condition examples of each year and model. The weather was kind to us and led to a truly fantastic turnout. It was an amazing sight to see so many MGBs in one location, a feat which won't be repeated for another ten years. And all planned and executed by a team of amazing volunteers.’
