SERVICE AN ALFA ROMEO

Today’s service is on a 2001 Alfa Romeo GTV Twin Spark. With qualified mechanic and MOT tester Steve Denton, I will run through all the routine service requirements for this model. Servicing of the Spider droptop models are identical, and the V6 engine versions are also similar. Note that cambelt and auxiliary drive belt replacement is due every three years or 36,000 miles on the Twin Spark engines.

How tough?

You’ll need:

► Trolley jack and axle stands

► Basic tools

► Oil filter wrench

► Socket set and torque wrench

► Rubber gloves and oil drain pan

► Brake fluid tester

► OBD II code reader (optional)

INTERIOR

1 Check electrical systems

Begin the service like an MOT tester by checking operation of all electrical systems. This should include dashboard warning lights, all external lights, horn, wipers and screen washer. Investigate and rectify any faults e.g. blown bulbs.

2 Read onboard diagnostic codes

If you have a code reader, plug in to the OBD II socket under the dash on the driver’s side and scan for any stored fault codes that may need attention. Low cost code readers can usually pinpoint engine faults.

3 Check interior

Examine seatbelts, seat movement and security and the operation of the handbrake. Pump the brake pedal to discharge servo vacuum, then start the engine and feel the pedal drop slightly as the servo operates.

TOP TIP Use a fully synthetic engine oil when sticking to Alfa's recommended oil change interval of 12,000 miles. For cars that are used for low mileages, consider semi-synthetic oil and changing it annually.

ENGINE BAY

4 Raise the car safely

For the following operations in the engine bay and then suspension and brakes, the car should be raised. Jack the front of the car on the subframe and securely place axle stands next to the suspension lower arm inner mounts.

TOP TIP If the car has little service history, assume that it needs a major service.

5 Check the coolant

Test the coolant concentration with a hydrometer or refractometer. Alfa Romeo recommend 50 per cent ethylene glycol antifreeze concentration that gives protection to at least -25° C. Replace the coolant biennially.

6 Test brake fluid

Low cost brake fluid testers indicate the moisture level in the hydraulic fluid reservoir, which must be less than one per cent. Replace the brake fluid every two years by emptying the reservoir and bleeding fresh fluid through all f
