Daimler is now being enjoyed again.

An unexpected barn find

The December 2022 issue of PC included a letter from Chris Wynn, who wrote: ‘I particularly like your down-to-earth approach to classics and potential classics as cars to be enjoyed, not just as investments.’ This struck a chord and prompted me to recount how driving a classic car as a daily driver can lead to remarkable opportunities.

In my job as a photocopier salesman I was travelling a lot of miles. To make the job more interesting and fun, I decided to use my restored 1982 Volkswagen Golf GTi MkI every day, and it proved reliable. However, being an avid enthusiast, I am always on the lookout for new projects.

One afternoon in the village of Bampton, one of the locals complimented me on the condition of my Golf and referred me to a farmer who was thinning out his collection.

He gave me a ride in the Land Rover to a dilapidated barn. The doors were prised open disturbing almost 50 years’ worth of undergrowth to reveal a 1955 Daimler Conquest Century in original, unmolested condition. To my disbelief and delight he said: ‘Here, you can have this one’. She is back on the road today and is proving to be a very usable classic that gives many smiles per mile.

FAREWELL, FRIEND

I'm writing to tell you of the death of my father, Paul Dixon, who was featured in PC in February 2006. The article was in relation to ‘Ruby’, his BMW Isetta. My father left the UK in 2014 to move to Australia, where he sadly passed away recently.

Paul was a PC star back in 2006.
