LETTER OF THE MONTH

This pic: Brings a new meaning to ‘going for a spin’. Below: With this much insulation, who needs a hood?

My Malvern motor is a workhorse!

I loved the recent letter in PC about whether you can use a Morgan in winter.

Before I had it shipped out to join me in New Zealand, the last UK trip in my Morgan 4/4 was over the Pennines to Cumbria. With my mum in the passenger seat, I lost sight of the edge of the road due to falling snow and slid off. This was in the days before everyone had a mobile phone.

Luckily, a doctor went off next to us, so we huddled in her car. Naturally I was wearing a WW2 flying jacket and helmet so, when the snow plough made it through (four hours later…), the driver said: 'Bloody hell, it's Dick Dastardly!’

Luckily, my mum has forgiven me and can even laugh about it now.

I've had the car from new for 28 years, and the hood has never once been on it – you can still see the factory chalk marks.

Attached are photos showing my Moggy at work. That washing machine is older than the car!

ADORE MOBILE

In response to Charlotte Vowden’s recent column, my wife Pamela and I are also mystified at how people take their cars to a show, park them up and then disappear for the rest of the day.

We have a 1969 Bedford CA Dormobile [pictured], which is not concours and we don't want it to be. We drive it all the time and although it’s more than 40 years old, we have it MoT’d every year. It is widely admired at all the shows we attend.

Pamela collects old boxes and tins of the period to show in our little glass cabinet. We also have a Sixties Brownie camera on show, together with some pre-decimal coins.

Say sorry!

It’s five years since classic owners were given a break, with the abolition of the MoT for vehicles over 40. Despite dire warnings, accident rates and insurance premiums haven’t increased. You must sometimes feature cars that don’t have an MoT? Why not admit you were wrong? Philip Holt, East Sussex ED Why not? Because there have been RTAs involving classics that can be put down to issues that would have been picked up at MoT; and premiumshave gone up.
