NYMR set to celebrate four decades from history

Our preserved railways are all struggling right now, thanks to reduced footfall and rising running costs. As a classic car enthusiast, the chances are that you love all kinds of engineering, so why not support a heritage railway this year? Many of them run classic car weekends, and one of our favourites is the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR), which runs between Pickering and Whitby, taking in Goathland, where TV show Hearbeat was set.

Over the weekend of October 14-15, the NYMR is running its 'Through the Decades' extravaganza, with each station focusing on a different decade. The Railway's

Peter Fisher told us: ‘Pickering will put a spotlight on the Forties, while Levisham will focus on the Fifties, with tractors and agricultural engines from that era. Goathland will take us back to the Sixties, with the station grounds full of cars, while Grosmont station will be a haven ofeverything Seventies. To celebrate the NYMR's 50th birthday, Grosmont station will also have an exhibition of our history including images from the opening day.

Classic cars and trains – what's not to like!

‘Vehicles already confirmed include a 1961 Vauxhall Victor F, a 1961 Cadillac Fleetwood, a 1969 Dodge Charger, and a 1967 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. Also on show will be a 1933 Bedford ambulance, thought to be one of only two operational ambulances from its era and a survivor of the Sheffield blitz.’ There's more information about everything that's taking place, at nymr.co.uk.

Lead Activities Co-ordinator Anna Przybylska told us: ‘When the SWCCC visited us, many of our 80 residents got involved, talking about their own cars, their parents’ cars and their childhood. It was a very kind gesture from the SWCCC members, who realised that not all classic car enthusiasts are able to go to shows, so it was fabulous that they brought the show to us.’ More at swccc.net and facebook.com/ BarchesterBrynIvor.

RALLYING ROUND

If you fancy enjoying an adrenalin rush over the weekend of September 30-October 1, you really do need to get along to the Historic Rally Festival. Event organiser Dan Ellmore comments: ‘This is by far our biggest event yet, with 80 cars already confirmed as taking part, including Group 1, 2, 4, A, B, N and WRC, so it's going to be a really varied weekend of flat-out competition. The full itinerary is available at historicrallyfestival.com, showing when the cars will be available to see at Hatton Grange and Weston Park in Shropshire. Some of the big names confirmed so far include Gwynd
