EMAIL OF THE MONTH

The military Austin Champ that gave Rob his mojo back.

I’m Champ-ing at the bit again!

A charitable classic car event I was once involved in disappeared from the local events calendar a year ago and I was left bereft. It ruined my enthusiasm for classic cars so I sold my collection of three and retreated into my home, feeling sad and lonely. I stopped reading magazines and eventually cancelled those subscriptions. I just had no interest any more.

However, a few months later I came to the realisation that something was missing in my life, so I joined the world of military vehicle ownership: a new crowd, new shows to attend and a completely fresh start. My 1954 Austin Champ became my new best friend.

Then one day, while trundling along in the Champ, I was overtaken by a superb-looking Triton Green TR7. A week or so later I found myself in a shop where the November 2023 issue of PC was lying suggestively on the shelf in front of me. I bought it, read it… and read it again. What a fantastic issue: the fuels article; Harris Mann; some great letters; the little three-wheel Morgan; and the technical bits.

Thank you, Practical Classics. You surpassed yourselves and helped to save my automotive life! Once again, I can look forward to skinned knuckles, oil-soaked skin and black fingernails while lying underneath whatever it is I end up buying.

WINTER-SPORTS CAR

I’m writing to tell you how the legendarily versatile Volvo estate has a life beyond antique dealers. This one is being used as a ski ramp at Selva Val Gardena in the Italian Dolomites. It’s been there for years, shrugging off the extreme weather, people skiing over it and, in my case several years ago, falling off it.

Many tanks, Danny…

The November issue of PC has just been delivered to my door and I must say I enjoyed Danny’s great Staff Car Saga on my old BMW’s tank swap and other fixes. What a job! I can only congratulate Danny and Clive for doing what they did with the car. I am sure it will prompt E38 readers to keep a close eye on those things you identified.

As the car’s former owner, I really hope Danny will feel able to keep R209 RBD in his stable for the long term so she gets care she deserves. Alan Bidmead, Stroud Ed – It’s a superb example that’s a credit to you, Alan; the tank was its one issue. So many cars are binned over one big-ticket item. Not on my watch!
