RAF lads plan to pilot a Spitfire the long way round the UK coast

MM hopes its Spitfire will be ready for its big run in 2024.

A team of servicemen from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire are looking for support to get their Spitfire (the Triumph version, that is…) off the ground, ready to raise money by driving it around the UK coastline in aid of forces charity Mission Motorsport.

Originally planned for this year but held back by budgetary and time constraints, RAF engineers Christian Rodd, Daniel Langton, Brad Cogan and Chris Wright are now hoping to set off on their Long Way Round tour next year, once they’ve restored the 1977 Triumph that was donated to the cause by a generous wellwisher.

‘The plan for the project is to drive the car around the UK with no breakdown cover, using four drivers to clock up 3750 miles in 10 days,’ said Christian. ‘After that, the car will be auctioned off to raise money for the charity.’

Currently, the car is in a restored rolling chassis state. ‘We've hit a wall in regard to funding,’ added Christian, ‘so we're trying to raise money to finish the vehicle.’
