A decade of the ‘friendly show’ to be celebrated at the NEC

Ten years ago we restored Vicki Butler-Henderson’s Fiesta –Danny Hopkins chats to Edd China as the team grapple with the engine.

It’s ten years since the Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration show’s first run out. Back in 2014, 12,000 visitors came through the doors – it’s three times that now. The whole PC team pulled out the stops to create something a bit different and, with organisers Clarion, we still do. Judging by the responses we have had, the PC Resto Show hit the mark and its continued success is a tribute to everyone who makes it fly.

That first show included one very special live stage rebuild, TV presenter Vicki Butler-Henderson’s Fiesta MkI. Vicki started her working life at Practical Classics as the office manager and the Fiesta was her commuter car – it was also the car she learned to drive in. It stayed in her family before being pushed into a barn on her parent’s farm, then we turned up, dragged it to the workshop, prepped and rebuilt it live at the show. Vicki came along and drove it offstage, the first time she had driven it in 20 years. That tradition of revival continues to this day, we will be breathing life back into Matt Tomkins’s barn find Mini at this year’s show to celebrate 65 years of Issigonis’s little marvel. We will also be welcoming Ant Anstead, Paul Cowland, a whole stream of YouTube stars to the live ‘Your Shout’ stage and of course, there will be us lot. Come and meet the team (and our cars) at Practical Classics World in Hall 5. We will have the live stage and also the winning cars from the past four years of Restorer of The Year including this year’s winner.

This year also marks eight years of the National Car Club Awards, and we will be handing out the gongs again in 2024. Here are the winners from 2016 with a fresh-faced Mike Brewer.

Add to that the all important action… every club at full tilt doing stuff to old cars. You’d be crazy not to come to ‘the friendly show’. Visit necrestorationshow.com and use your code PCMAG for a nifty discount.

Danny says

‘Thank you for making our show fly… every year it feels like you all come over to the workshop for a cup of tea, only on a truly enormous scale. A personal thanks to driving force, Andrea Seed, who works tirelessly behind the scenes every year to make it happen.’
