Ludlow is a thriving market town and an architectural gem, busy with events and festivals throughout the year. The town is surrounded by the beautiful countryside of south Shropshire and the Welsh Marches, making it an excellent base for walking, cycling and exploring.

DAY 1

9am A hearty start Fuel up for the day at Aragon’s, a charming café in the heart of Ludlow. From Full English to fluffy pancakes, their menu is brimming with options that are all locally sourced. Enjoy a bite in the sunny garden or at tables facing the town square.

10am Market stalls Ludlow’s fine square has hosted markets since the 12th century. With up to five markets a week, the heart of the town is a hive of activity. Sample fine food and drink at the Local Produce Market or browse the crafts on General Market days.

11.30am Off to church A stroll along cobbled streets brings you to St Laurence’s Church, the largest parish church in the county.

Dating back to the 11th century, this imposing structure is home to catacombs, stained-glass windows and a bell tower. If you can brave the narrow staircase, the tower rewards visitors with panoramic views. stlaurences.org.uk

1pm Lunch break Time to sample one of Ludlow’s foodie attractions with a visit to CSONS. Tucked behind the castle beside the River Teme, this homely café-restaurant serves hearty, locally sourced food. Enjoy their unique takes on familiar classics.

2.30pm Historic castle The jewel in Ludlow’s crown is its stunning castle. Back in the square, the stately ruins can be seen rising above the imposing walls encircling the grounds. Dating from 1066, the castle has been home to kings and earls, a Royalist stronghold and living quarters for judges, and is now a hugely atmospheric attraction. Tickets £8 (16+), £4 (5-15s).

4pm Woodland walk A short walk from the castle and across the pretty Dinham Bridge, you’ll find the riverside Whitcliffe Common Nature Reserve. Footpaths traverse luscious woodland, and Bread Walk, a bankside promenade built in 1850, passes cliff faces and a wonderful waterfall.

6pm Time to dine Returning to the town centre, head to Chang Thai, near the square. This lively restaurant serves an extensive menu of Thai dishes, with a selection of cocktails and local beers.

10am Foodie shopping Explore a bit further afield with a trip to Ludlow Farmshop, which is just a couple of miles north of the town. You can eat, shop and relax at this centre
