This hardy tavern on a bluff overlooking the English Channel has been serving ale since 1776, to everyone from smugglers to Nobel laureates. Positioned on the world-renowned Jurassic Coast, on a section infamous for its steep inclines, it’s now a much-loved pitstop for ramblers. Offering a range of local beer and cider (served through a hatch), food options consist solely of homemade pasties and pies, but the humble fare never fails to hit the spot. What makes this inn unique, though, is its own mini museum, packed with fossils (such as ammonites and ichthyosaurs) and ancient artefacts (such as flint tools and Roman coins), all unearthed from the surrounding area.
