NEW SERIES

Now, this is an awful lot of fun. George Villiers is a real historical figure, who was favoured in the court of James VI and I and widely identified as the King’s lover. That hot gobbet of 17th-century gossip is the launchpad for aviciously entertaining romp, which carries acontent warning for language — there is some really first-rate swearing in it —and for sex scenes, but is for adults only mainly on account of the sheer, scheming misanthropy on display. The master manipulator is George’s fearsome mother Mary (Julianne Moore), a woman who has married her way from nothing up to adecent position in society, but wants more: when she clocks that the King likes handsome men, she looks at the spectrally beautiful George (Nicholas Galitzine) and hatches a brilliant, terrible plan.

The George we meet at first is, however, an embarrassment to Mary, who packs him off to a French château for a sort of honey-trap boot camp. When he returns to England, the games begin.

Dave Myers and Si King are having a great time touring north-west Wales, tasting tastebud-tingling Nigerian food, learning about proper coffee and the concept of permaculture farming as well as enjoying the architectural marvel that is Portmeirion. They’re also inspired to make empanadas, atiramisu using Welsh cake and a “proper tasty” coffee-and-chilli brisket.

But the subject of Dave’s health issues is never far away and occasionally he’s forced to step back from filming. In Porthmadog he drives asteam train, though: “It’s nice to see asmile on his face because he’s had abloody rough time,” says his best mate.

After aweek’s break, Stacey and her band of merry workers tackle an unbelievably cluttered house in Hull. You can’t see the floors or even open the front door because of the stuff piled everywhere. However, when Tim and Daniela explain the series of life events and disasters that have stopped their tidying and DIY, and why they can’t bear throwing things out, you won’t judge them.

Once again, the children are better than the parents at chucking stuff out and there are emotional scenes. The reveal is very satisfying though, with tears, shrieks of joy and lots of hugs. As we all know by now, Stacey’s big on hugging.
