The Shop around the Corner

2.00-3.35pm BBC2 (not in N Ireland, Wales)y

ROMANCE This truly wonderful film is deftly directed by the great Ernst Lubitsch and contains a delightful performance by Margaret Sullavan, full of grace and warmth. The plot, about pen pals who fall in love after realising they work together, is paper-thin, but there is charm in abundance, and the young James Stewart is a portrait in perfection. Judy Garland starred in the 1949 musical remake, In the Good Old Summertime, and it was also remade in 1998 as You’ve Got Mail, with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The film is followed by a Talking Pictures special on Stewart. TONY SLOMAN (US 1940, BW, HD)

ADVENTURE This stylish, joyous animated spin for the webslinging superhero sees young Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) gaining superpowers from the bite of a radioactive spider. He then teams up with spider folk from across the multiverse to stop villain Kingpin. The film is bursting with colour and in-jokes, and it deservedly won an Oscar. STEPHEN

Star Trek IV: the Voyage Home

SCI-FI After three po-faced adventures (including The Search for Spock, showing earlier today), the original Enterprise crew let their hair down with this entertaining outing. Kirk (William Shatner) and co travel back to 1980s San Francisco to free a couple of whales in order to safeguard’s Earth’s future. The sci-fi spectacle is dialled down in favour of some fun, fish-out-of-water scenarios.

Sonic the Hedgehog

3.35-5.30pm E4 g

ADVENTURE The speedy blue video-game icon cuts a spiky dash in his feature debut. The plot has space critter Sonic enlisting the help of a small-town cop (James Marsden) in fleeing the clutches of a mad scientist, played with relish by a scene-stealing Jim Carrey. Despite some fairly patchy animation, this is Sonic at the top of his game.

THRILLER In this twisty and suspenseful movie, botanist Liam Neeson awakens after a Berlin car accident to find no one recognises him. Neeson is a likeable everyman hero, January Jones is icy cool as his wife, while Bruno Ganz is an engaging presence as the ex-Stasi investigator trying to learn the truth.
