PSYCHEDELIC STORY Syd Barrett and his Pink Floyd bandmates

Have You Got It Yet? The Story of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd

9.00pm Sky Arts Catch up via Now Despite Pink Floyd’s gargantuan 1970s record sales, there are always some who say “I prefer their really early stuff”. And by this, of course, they mean the band’s whimsical yet potently psychedelic, late 1960s Syd Barrett years.

Although this atmospheric portrait of Barrett first came out last year, its interviews are conducted by his childhood friend Storm Thorgerson, the co-founder of design studio Hipgnosis, who died in 2013. And Thorgerson clearly leveraged his bulging contact book to access those who knew the singer best, including the former girlfriends and school mates who tend to provide the most subtle details in this type of story.

As acomplement to the anecdotes, the stills photography is fabulous, with Syd’s mesmerising eyes drawing your gaze on every shot. And if this documentary is your bag, Squaring the Circle: the Story of Hipgnosis is also well worth watching. It’s currently available to stream on Netflix.

HISTORY

Bettany Hughes’s Treasures of the World

6.50pm C4 Catch up: C4 streaming Where was the oldest gold jewellery in the world found? Forget Greece, China or Egypt —that honour goes to Bulgaria and the 6,000-year-old pieces dug up by atelecoms engineer while laying cables. It led to the discovery of aprehistoric necropolis unlike anything even historian Bettany Hughes has seen before.

Her engaging exploration of the world’s less publicised archaeological hotspots, like Bulgaria, sees her uncovering more gems. But while the ancient Greek settlements and lost Thracian tombs are amazing, it’s the echoes of the ancient world that persist today that resonate most, from bridal face-painting to fire rituals. It’s “a past that lives in the present”, she says.

REALITY

Our Dream Farm

7.50pm C4 Catch up: C4 streaming Akin to The Apprentice but with muddy boots rather than sharp suits, this reality series sees aspiring agriculturalists compete for atenyear tenancy at the National Trust’s vacant Wallington Estate farm in Northumberland. Now at the midway mark, the remaining six candidates must look after the lambing ewes, while hosting an educational but fun farm visit for 30 schoolchildren. Will an egg hunt, straw-scattering, wool-weaving or worm-charming be entertaining enough?

One hopeful tries to fix the old Ferguson tractor and two more must pitch their business plans. Host Matt Baker isn’t nearly as forbidding as Lord Sugar but there are still emotional scenes when somebody’s dream ends.
