WEDNESDAY 8 MAY

END OF THE LINE? Gerry and Wilma (Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton) wait for their train

ANTHOLOGY

10.00pm BBC2 Catch up via iPlayer All aboard for the ninth and final series of the dazzlingly inventive Inside No 9, which starts asix-part shuffle towards its terminus with Boo to a Goose. The action unfolds in a train carriage — C9, to be precise —on astretch of Merseyrail’s Northern Line. The lives of nine late-night passengers intersect when the service stalls in atunnel, with new bonds forming while other relationships break down.

Could there be asex pest and/or thief among them or something even more sinister?

It’s great to see Siobhan Finneran in aNo 9at last, albeit paired with the buttoned-up Gerry (Reece Shearsmith), not her Benidorm hubby, Steve Pemberton, who here plays vicious drag queen Wilma. Mark Bonnar guest-stars as aparticularly nasty fellow traveller, while This Country’s Charlie Cooper seems to be experiencing homelessness very convincingly.

It all makes for abeautifully observed character piece, though you may be left chewing your lip in bemusement at the dénouement.

Since the 2001 racial disturbances in Burnley, Lancashire, the clergy and the imams have worked together to build bridges between the communities and show that “there’s more that unites us than divides us”. Key to this is an annual cricket match, so Andi Oliver “turns it up a notch” by swiftly sorting adelicious party menu that includes mushroom pies, curried Scotch eggs and juice ’n’ ginger shots —but the blustery weather is against them.

What also blows her away is Burnley’s community spirit. “Embracing differences and banishing the demons of the past is what life is all about,” she says emotionally.
