Adam Lambert: Out, Loud and Proud

9.00pm ITV1 Catch up via ITVX Adam Lambert has been singing with Queen for well over a decade, yet until now, he hasn’t sat down with Brian May and Roger Taylor on camera to speak openly about Freddie Mercury. Their conversation —about Mercury’s sexuality and their memories from a time when speaking plainly about being gay was taboo —is described by Lambert as a special moment in his one-off authored documentary about LGBTQ+ music artists.

No preview was available, but we’ve been promised a look back at the past 50 or so years of British pop culture, featuring some trailblazing musicians who have led the way with queer representation on stage. Lambert turns interviewer as he speaks to Erasure’s Andy Bell, Skunk Anansie’s Skin and comparative newcomer MNEK about their experiences and the battles they have faced.

“Even in today’s world there are challenges,” reflects Lambert. “But looking back at history, putting it into a retrospective gives you hope and makes you realise that positive strides have been made.”

People often bring in much-loved toys, books, paintings or ceramics that they want restored to their former glory. However, in this edition first shown in 2022, Merlene’s precious item is a bit different. She has a pair of dressmaking scissors that belonged to her Jamaican mother May, a seamstress who would make outfits without using a pattern. Rather sweetly, all Merlene asks Jonathan Reid and Brenton West to do is “make them shine again”.

Meanwhile, Mark Stuckey is working on a radio that Vos’s ingenious Dutch grandfather hid in a book during the Second World War so he could secretly get information to pass on to the resistance.
