We say: The car – as a superlative expression of our yearning for self-determination and freedom – will truly learn to fly. Presumably it will do so even sooner than we can imagine. At the same time, ­however, flying cars are sure to be just one aspect of more complex solutions for the mobility and transport demands of the future. The burning question remains: Who will come up with all these solutions? Engineers? Mechanics? Nerds? More than a few are betting on machine ­intelligence. AI is currently being touted as the greatest transformation in informatics since the ­invention of the computer. Whether wishful thinking will become a reality is a matter of arithmetic. And perhaps the intelligent car will just jolly well reinvent itself someday. Another burning question: What do algorithms dream about?
