WHEN WEIGHING UP THE EVIDENCE, ALL SUSPECTS MUST BE ELIMINATED UNTIL ONLY ONE REMAINS

THEODORE KACZYNSKI

Arguments For:

• Kaczynski was a mathematical genius.

• He had knowledge of building bombs similar to those the Zodiac threatened to detonate.

• Hewitt’s timeline of the Unabomber and the Zodiac suggest they harmoniously exist, providing an answer to the question as to why Kaczynski waited until he was middleaged to begin killing, when it is commonplace for serial killers to begin their crimes in their 20s.

Arguments Against:

• At least four of the confirmed seven victims of the Zodiac were killed at a time when Kaczynski was in Montana building his cabin or spending time with his brother David.

• Kaczynski’s fingerprints were analysed and were not considered similar to those of the Zodiac.

ARTHUR LEIGH ALLEN

Arguments For:

• When searching his home, police found a Zodiac watch belonging to Allen.

• Allen owned a Royal typewriter similar to the one used to type up the Zodiac’s confession letter in the Bates murder.

• Surviving victim Michael Mageau identified Allen as the man who had attacked him and killed his girlfriend.

Arguments Against:

• After testing Allen’s handwriting, results showed that it did not match the Zodiac letters.

• Vallejo and the San Francisco Police tested his DNA and fingerprints but they were not able to match them to the Zodiac cases.

RICHARD GAIKOWSKI

Arguments For:

• In 1969, Gaikowski, who worked for the Good Times newspaper, published his articles under “Gike” or “Gaik” to shorten his last name. That same year, the police received the third-part cipher from the Zodiac, which clearly displayed the name
