The Thelwall Viaduct is a steel structure on the M6 consisting of two bridges both well over 4,000 feet long. It carries vehicles across the mud-brown River Mersey and grey Manchester Ship Canal. From the viaduct, you can see the large sprawl of a Cheshire town come into view. For much of the 19th century and until the mid-20th century, Warrington was a place of industry – wire, beer, mining, chemicals, car parts. Today it has shed nearly all vestiges of its industrial past; long gone are the factories and wastelands that once pockmarked whole areas. Housing developments now flourish where once the worker sweated and toiled. There remains only a few signs of what once was – the metallic towers of the now-closed Unilever chemical plant and the endless number of haulage trucks rattling along the main roads night and day, going to and from the many distribution centres on the town’s outskirts.
