Amara Hasham’s amazing makeover of her rented family home is a masterclass in clever, reversible decorating

After living with magnolia walls for many years, Amara never resists an opportunity to add more colour and personalise her space. Her favourite bold mustard yellow chair was a Mother’s Day gift from her children. She also upcycled the small filing cabinet with gold handles.

‘I wanted our bedroom to make us feel happy and relaxed, but I also wanted to express my personal style and mix Eastern and Western influences,’ says Amara. The wallpaper is removable, pasted on top of selfadhesive plastic film.

The main bedroom’s gallery wall has a botanical theme to fit with the wallpaper’s bold floral motif. Amara fitted 12 pages from a flower calendar in matching lightweight frames to give a uniform look; nothing is wasted in this creative and budget-savvy home.

An inspiring work space was a must for Amara, who retreated to this corner of the main bedroom to write during lockdown. She chose a fun zig-zag theme for the décor and accessories, using a kitchen sponge to paint her wavy designs on vertical strips of masking tape.

Just because you’re paying rent doesn’t mean you have to live with blank walls, basic light fittings and boring bathrooms. That’s the conclusion Amara had reached before starting to improve the family’s four-bedroom home in Berkshire.

And the results of her daring – and temporary – transformation, all done by Amara with help from her family, has made her the well-deserved best makeover winner in the Real Homes Awards. Hasham’s former job as a pilot meant they moved around a lot, living in various rented homes for the past 20 years. ‘I’ve always been cautious about making changes,’ admits Amara. ‘But our current landlord knew we were taking good care of this property and was comfortable with us making cosmetic updates.’
