THREE OF RED’S FAVOURITE TASTEMAKERS SHARE THEIR SUMMER STYLE

Michelle Ranavat,
FOUNDER OF HER EPONYMOUS BEAUTY LINE, TALKS SUN-FILLED LA STAYCATIONS, UV PROTECTION PROTOCOLS AND POPSICLES

I love a warm climate. It reminds me of visiting India as a child. Having grown up in Chicago, I now live in Los Angeles, where the weather is just beautiful all year round. What’s different in the summer months, though, is that the city empties out; people tend to go elsewhere for vacations, so my family and I stay here and make the most of the city being quieter, taking time to explore.

Popsicle-making is a big summer tradition in our house. My boys and I will get all the different fruits that are in season, such as watermelon and beautifully ripe cherries (cherry season is so amazing here in LA), and we make them into a mix and freeze them. And then we also have the Fourth of July. It’s my husband’s birthday on the fifth, so we do a combined celebration. Traditionally, the Fourth of July has a barbecue culture, but we’re vegetarian so don’t do that – instead we’ll do a celebratory version of what we normally eat, finished, of course, with popsicles.

The combination of LA’s arid desert climate and constantly needing air-conditioning to stay cool means it gets quite dry here (and my skin does not do well with AC!). But at the same time, because of the heat, I don’t want to be putting heavy, rich creams or masks on to combat the dryness, so instead I use our Ranavat Resurfacing Saffron Masque; the gel texture cools your face as it lightly exfoliates dry patches. Otherwise, I’ll tend to use the same skincare all year round, just in different ways and quantities. For example, in summer, I’ll mix Ranavat Brightening Saffron Serum with a few drops of my Hydrating Jasmine Mist (a drop plus a spray and then I tap it on), so that it’s lighter.

SPF is a year-round habit for me. My current favourite is one from Uriage – the Eau Thermale Bariésun Silky Lotion SPF50+. I find it a great mix of something that’s highly protective but, in terms of texture, really lovely and thin, which I like. And it has a lot of UVA protection. In the summer months, I also wear my Eric Javits UPF hat, which has built-in sun protection. It’s my little double act against UV.

Working out is something I do summer and winter. I like to do a full-body workout with some weight training. And in the summer, mascara, and then brush up my brows a little with Pixi Natural Brow Duo and finish with Ilia Balmy Tint Hydrating Lip Balm in Faded. If I’m travelling, a good eyeliner and glowy skin is all I really need.

I think sun and saltwater damage to hair is something that people aren’t particularly aware of, but I really notice it, so I try to protect against it. As well as my hat, I use the Ranavat Fortifying Hair Serum, lightly running it through my scalp and hair, wh
