The latest iteration of Weekend Max Mara’s iconic Pasticcino bag is a joyful celebration of French artisanal excellence in one stylish and sumptuously squishy pouch

Chic and versatile, a Pasticcino bag will suit any occasion

Accessories don’t always get their own world tour, but then the Pasticcino isn’t any old bag. Launched in 2016 by luxury Italian label Weekend Max Mara, it has achieved cult status over the years with fans across the globe, so it seems only fitting that this rock star of a bag should touch down in Paris this summer in a flurry of fondant fancy-coloured lace.

Designed to be carried as a clutch, cross-body or shoulder bag (just switch up the multiple straps), the Pasticcino Bag Hommage à la France comes in macaron shades of lavender, yellow, fuchsia and tangerine, and is inspired by Marie Antoinette’s divine pastel wardrobe in Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film about the life of the young Queen. It’s safe to say that were Marie Antoinette alive today, she would have a Pasticcino in every colour tucked away in her garderobe. But this sweet little delicacy (pasticcino means ‘small pastry’ in Italian) is not just for royalty. ‘I’d love to see everyone carrying a Pasticcino regardless of age, style or gender identity,’ says Nicola Maramotti, retail director at Max Mara. Each shade brings a different personality to an outfit and a playful punctuation of colour to an everyday wardrobe – whether that’s orange giving a pop of joy to denim or lilac lending a fashion edge to simple black tailoring. ‘I think the Italians are so clever at using accessories to transform a look,’ notes Maramotti. ‘Just the addition of something special to a basic white shirt can be so impactful and elevate it to a whole new leve
