There’s something about autumn and the natural desire to slow into some sort of hibernation that allows time for reflection, too. As I flick through the pages of this issue, I realise more than once that there’s a suggestion to view things a little differently – whether that’s changing what we’ll wear or eat, or revising the way we think and even choose to act.

Quiet Luxury seems to be the buzz term of the moment, and it feels perfect for both the season and our Red ethos: buy less but better and choose things with longevity (which probably means avoiding flash-in-the-pan trends). Both our fashion stories in this issue reflect this – I’ll admit, I’m slightly obsessed with the classic pieces and modern colour palette of The Weekenders on page 70, but I’m equally taken with the polished pairings on page 84. In Haute Pursuit on page 100 explores how the trend translates to hair (as my colourist Lucy puts it, the look du jour is ‘old money’). We’re rethinking our suppers, too, swapping out salads for delicious, enriching legumes on page 116 and baking cakes dense with autumnal fruit on page 130.

But it’s the challenge to re-examine some deeper-rooted thoughts that I find most powerful in this issue. In Work It Out on page 52, Dr Michelle P King reveals how a successful career is not about working harder or smarter, but reading the workplace better. Then, on page 36, bestselling author and Red’s former agony aunt Philippa Perry shares her wisdom on how to improve the relationships in our lives (spoiler: it starts with our own belief systems).
