‘Any makeup looks better when the skin looks fresh,’ says celebrity makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes. For shine in the right places, she saturates the high points of the face with moisturiser, then uses a dense brush to paint balmy highlights lightly over the top: the tips of the nose and chin, the very tops of cheekbones and hugging the hairline along the forehead. Contour, blush, concealer and foundation come afterwards, patchworked around the zones you’ve just illuminated, for a sheer finish that looks and feels like skin, not makeup.

Pick up a brush for invisibly enhanced skin… or even two. ‘Fingers are great for blush or a smudgy lip, but for flawless skin that doesn’t look made up? Well, you’re never going to get that with a sponge,’ says makeup artist Lynsey Alexander. ‘I use a flat brush to apply my foundation, then I’ll airbrush it in with a fluffy buffing brush, and that’s your secret weapon. It’s a process of putting on then taking away; really looking at your skin before adding any more. If you use the same brush, you’ll end up with a build-up of product. This way, you’ll build up your base in fine layers that won’t melt off two seconds later.’
