EDITOR‘S LETTER

I know we’ve put together a good issue when, as I’m editing the copy, I’ll impart the words of wisdom to my friends ahead of time. Such is the case with this April instalment, which is so full of great talking points I feel like one should read it armed with a pen and paper, ready to take notes.

For me, this starts on page 44 where, to celebrate International Women’s Day, we asked some of our favourite contributors to share the most valued piece of advice they’ve received from another woman. I love Sophie Williams’s mention of Shine Theory, which suggests you should align yourself with the women who shine most brightly in a room, rather than be threatened by them, to set yourself aglow, too. Also, Tamu Thomas’s idea around updating your personal narrative to reflect the person you are now, not who you once were, and Holly Tucker, who says she now holds herself responsible for knowing difficult things and making changes based on them.

Better Together on page 52 is similarly thought-provoking. I found the ‘two-pizza rule’ (that any successful team should be small enough to share two large pizzas) and the ‘premortem’ (predicting why an idea might fail before it actually does) really useful in helping me think about our own team here at Red and how we strategise together.

On the subject of talking points, Laura Craik’s brilliant essay Oh, Mother! on page 36 muses on modern motherhood and asks why society keeps shifting the goalposts (and how is it still so hard to have kids and a career).
