10 BEST USED BIKES

THE BEST SPORTS TOURER

Versatile, well-priced and more than up for a sporty tour or two – and the 2014-2019 model makes for a great used buy

Kawasaki’s Z1000SX proves that despite adventure bikes now being a genuine alternative to the traditional role of sports tourer, if you build a comfortable, agile and practical relaxed sportsbike, riders will buy it. And if, as Kawasaki has done, you arm it with lots of tech and a low price, it will be a huge seller.

Launched in 2011, the SX has gradually evolved and matured – and the third generation is by far the best of the bunch. Armed with all the latest tech, including angle-responsive electronics (although sadly not cruise control), the SX also ticks the practicality boxes with an adjustable screen, clean ‐mount panniers and upright riding position. But despite this it manages to not get too serious and remains a fun and spirited bike to ride.

The 1043cc inline four is the SX’s standout feature, with a lovely linear nature and bags of midrange drive. Classy, easy-going and refined, the engine is happy to live life at low revs, but get it up in the range and it delivers a typical Ninja zap of performance. And should you wish to take advantage of this, the chassis responds accordingly.

Smaller and more agile than some rivals, the SX is more than happy to be ridden with enthusiasm. Far from a compromise if you are used to a sportsbike – on the road it has all the handling you could need, yet its suspension is pleasingly supple, bars set high enough to prevent wrist-ache, and the seat doesn’t feel like it is made from granite.

And arguably best of all, you can have all this practicality and ease in a bike that doesn’t look dull – the SX’s aggressive lines, radial brakes and stylish exhausts give it a pleasingly no-nonsense stance.

Although we have singled out the final generation of Z1000SX before it became the Ninja 1000SX, you can’t really go too far wrong with any SX model. The original bike lacks tech and is avoided by some, though it is still a very solid package.

However, we reckon it is worth spending the extra on the 2014-onwards model as it’s a nicer, safer, swifter package thanks to the TC and ABS, as well as a more refined chassis and motor.
