LETTER OF THE MONTH

It’s great that Paul Thomson is continuing his biking life at 79 by switching to a scooter (RiDE, February). We all make compromises on bike choice based on ability, affordability and body shape; age is just another one of these factors. Personally, I’ll nod or wave at bikes, trikes, scooters and even some quads; I don’t get why some people think your choice of bike makes you worthy of a nod.

I own both a BMW and a Honda. It’s surprising how many BMW riders don’t nod when I’m on the Honda…

All riders are worthy of a nod – regardless of what they ride

We love all bikes and Inod at everyone… whether I get aresponse or not. I’m surprised you get less nods when you’re on the BMW, though. I’ve found unless you’re on acruiser, ‘mainstream’ bikers treat all makes much the same.

Andrew agrees: progressing to a full A licence is restrictive

Out on licence

Reading Larry Blyth’s letter in the February issue, I completely agree with your response on the licence ladder. I passed my A2 test aged 21 in 2015. It is now 2024 and I still have the same licence because the cost – and, let’s be honest, hassle - of progressing to a full A licence is restrictive. But this has not stopped me from riding and enjoying bikes over these years.

Hopefully something can be done to encourage both the current and next generations to continue biking.

We’re so glad that the cost and hassle hasn’t put you off. It seems manufacturers understand this, which presumably is why so many produce A2-compliant versions of bigger bikes, so riders like you can enjoy motorcycling with all the features but abit less power.

Backpack in saddle

I have just returned to riding after a ten-year break, currently riding a BMW F800GT. I have been buying RiDE monthly and have just taken out a subscription, which I should have done months ago. I took out a subscription the last time I was riding and received a free gift: a RiDE rucksack.

While I’m on, I loved the sub-£100 glove test and was impressed at the quality and price of the RiDE best buy, the ARMR Kumaji 3.0. But I am struggling to find anywhere that sells them.

Welcome back as a subscriber, John. Nowadays the subscription offers are generally saving money. Regarding the gloves: we checked and apparently the ARMR gloves are delayed and not due to be available until very early March, from Oxford Products; we were not made aware of this when we conducted the test.

Smaller is better?

I’ve just read the letter in the February issue
