THE PRODUCT TEST

Don’t get caught out by an April shower with these lightweight waterproofs

TWO-PIECE WATERPROOFS ARE a great example of kit you should never leave home without. Small and generally light enough to fit in the bottom of a rucksack or under a seat, they provide enough protection to ensure your day isn’t ruined by damp clothing if the conditions take a turn for the worse. They can also make you more visible to other road users in bad visibility that often accompanies poor weather.

But they aren’t just good in wet conditions - they are also very helpful in the dry. Two-piece waterproofs will generally also be windproof and can help keep the cold out by reducing the effects of wind chill. Then, once the sun emerges, they can be quickly rolled up and tucked away.

Also, should the road be a bit damp, sticking on a set can help prevent your clothing becoming covered in a nasty layer of dirt or spray. And when you get home, they are far quicker and easier to wash and dry than a bulky set of textiles or your best leathers.

We’ve gathered a selection of two ‐piece waterproofs that are designed to be lightweight and easy to take with you on a journey. Most have handy storage bags, making them even more convenient, and cost remarkably little money when you consider how useful they will prove to be.

So, let’s see which set performs the best and which aren’t worth lugging around with you on your next ride.

Each set was weighed before and after they got a soaking

How we tested them

We asked for waterproofs to fit over a sporty textile jacket (size XL) and pair of riding jeans (34in waist). We timed how long they took to put on and looked for design features that made them awkward to use, before riding in them on a predetermined test route to rate their performance.

The bike used was a naked, so offered no wind protection.

To evaluate their waterproofing, each set was subjected to a continuous soaking by a jet wash, with the rider sat stationary on the same naked bike. The water was directed at the same areas of the rider for the same amount of time from a set distance. Any leaks were noted.

Comfort and fit We scored each set on how they fitted, with marks deducted for draughty cuffs, excessive flapping and a loose fit, and added for features such as a soft collar lining.

Ease of use Are they easy to put on quickly? We awarded points for sensible features that helped the rider don them quickly and with minimal hassle.

Features Helpful features such as a storage bag, adjustment system, pockets and hood were assessed and scored.
