Hello everyone and welcome to September – the month when, God willing and with a fair wind, I will celebrate my last birthday beginning with a five.

There was a time when the imminent prospect of a decade change would have sent me spiralling into a frenzy of existential angst.

At 29 I was worrying about getting old (I know, I know) and whether I would ever be married to anything except my job; at 39 it was all about whether I had left it too late to have more than one child; and at 49 I was paranoid (rightly, as it turned out) that I was going to be made redundant from my Fleet Street job as soon as I turned 50 and (obviously, wrongly) that I would never work again.

If only I’d been able to fast forward to the summer of 2023 and see myself whooping it up at Camp Bestival in Dorset with my husband and youngest daughter watching 75-year-old Grace Jones storming it up on stage. The fact that I was partying alongside thousands of others well over 50 was the icing on the cake.

Talking of cakes, if and when one arrives for me later this month, I’m going to be thankful for all those candles, take a (very) big breath, and worry about nothing more than having the strength to blow them all out in one go.
