They say you should never meet your heroes. Well, in the case of my encounter with Jilly Cooper (p30), they (who exactly are ‘they’, anyway?) could not have been more wrong.

Jilly surpassed every expectation. She was warm, funny and marvellously indiscreet – and sitting in her glorious Gloucestershire kitchen drinking Champagne counts as a highlight of my professional year.

Getting the call from our associate editor Kirsty Tyler telling me that Tom Hanks had agreed to be interviewed by Saga Magazine was another. Tom rarely does print interviews these days, and we couldn’t be more delighted that he chose to talk to Saga readers about his latest pet project in the UK (p22).

I really hope you enjoy our festive issue. Do take a moment if you can to look closely at the cover. Artist Helen Musselwhite has created something very special – an intricate 3D Christmas scene made entirely from cut-out paper. I thought you might enjoy seeing how it all came together over several weeks (see right).

Check out the two little donkeys behind the house – something we requested to highlight our lovely feature on why these funny, fabulous creatures are also seriously in the money (p26).

I wish you all a happy Christmas, and please do keep sending in your letters next year. They really are the gift that keeps on giving for all of us here at Saga Magazine.
