EDITOR’S LETTER

Hello and welcome to February. It’s not a month I am looking forward to with unbridled enthusiasm as it marks the start of yet another campaign to lose three stone – this time before my significant birthday in the autumn.

Operation Snake Hips by 60 was meant to kick off with a dry January, which within days became a damp January and then finally segued into a ‘mine’s a gin and tonic, I’ll start next month’ January. I know, I know, but to quote that wise and compassionate poet Alexander Pope – and regular readers will know how often I do that – ‘to err is human, to forgive divine’.

Quoting poetry is one of the pastimes of our fabulous cover star Frank Skinner (p24). He loves it so much he has a hugely successful podcast dedicated to discussing his favourite poems. I highly recommend it, along with his Saturday morning radio show, which he co-hosts with our brilliant beauty editor, Emily Dean (p73).

We all fell in love with Frank during our cover shoot, which took place in London just before the festive break, and holds the record for overrunning because he was so charmingly chatty. I particularly enjoyed hearing how his cleaner left him for Daniel Craig. Years later, this is clearly one area where divine forgiveness is simply not an option for Frank. As someone who has endured more than her fair share of similar defections – though not in my case to A-list superstars –

I empathise completely. I hope you enjoy this month’s issue and, as ever, I look forward to hearing your feedback. Your letters and emails (p114) continue to be a highlight of this job. And as this month is a leap year I’m delighted you’ll have an extra day to send them.

I’m also looking forward to meeting some of you at our 40th annive
