FROM THE CEO 

Seeing John Cleese on the front cover this month has transported me back to my childhood. I grew up with my parents running a guesthouse in Margate and while they were nothing like Basil and Sybil (most of the time!), when you have a family-owned hotel there are always moments behind the scenes that could come straight from the script of Fawlty Towers.

We certainly had more than our fair share of interesting characters passing through the doors over the years and it kept us busy.

It’s been busy here at Saga too, what with our results presentation and Annual Report coming out in the middle of April. We were very pleased with the numbers we shared as we continue to deliver on our strategy, growing profits and reducing debt. That wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of our fantastic colleagues and the loyal support of our customers, so I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped us along the way.

Having indulged in one too many Easter eggs, I – like many others here at Saga – have been stepping into sportswear for a 30-day step challenge, ‘Active April’, aimed at encouraging colleagues to get physically active. I’m a great believer in the power of staying fit and have always been a keen runner, so it was a chance for me to dust off my trainers and get back on track for the summer.

The upcoming May bank holidays should provide plenty more opportunity for running as well as giving me some much-needed time to spend with my family, albeit my daughter will be studying hard for her GCSEs, which start this month. Hopefully the weather will improve so I can get my motorbike out, and I might even find a quiet moment to do some painting – a relatively new hobby I took up a year or two back. I currently have to choose between painting cute animals at the request of my wife and daughter, or portraits of boxing legends for my son. Either way, it’s a great tool to help swi
