Lowestoft Beacon Marina is not only an ideal sanctuary for when the going gets tough on the North Sea, but it is also a popular base for east coast cruising says Sue Pelling

BERTHING FOR 128YACHTS for vessels up to 20m including 10 places for visitors – all fully serviced

Lowestoft is one of the east coast’s major ports not just for fishing and commercial vessels but given the fact it is one of the ‘gateways’ to the Norfolk Broads, it is also a popular destination for leisure craft.

Lowestoft Beacon Marina, which was opened in 2003 was formally known as Lowestoft Haven Marina. Now it is one of a collection of three Beacon marinas (Ipswich, Lowestoft and Fleetwood) owned by Associated British Ports (ABP) and has become a firm favourite not only for those wishing to explore the Norfolk Boards but also as an ideal departure point for cruising to Holland or the continent. For those seeking a retreat from the harsh condition on the North Sea, Lowestoft Beacon Marina is particularly welcoming.

In its recent upgrade there are now 128 fully serviced pontoon berths for vessels up to 20m including 10 visitor berths, and totally re-vamped facilities, which means berth-holders and visitors can enjoy a relaxing stay in smart surroundings. The marina office, which is located on the first floor of the main building, includes the toilets (able and less able bodied), shower facilities and a laundry room. For boat maintenance, the boatyard is equipped with a Wise hoist, which can lift vessels up to 65 tons.

Another advantage of visiting this east coast marina is the fact it is accessible at all states of the tide with just one lifting road bridge (the A12) to negotiate on the way in. There is a schedule of regular bridge lifting times and, once through into the Inner harbour, the marina is just 20 minutes upstream on Lake Lothing.

The marina is basically situated at the entrance to the Oulton Broads, which means it’s possible, with the right sort of boat (shallow draught and mast that can be lowered) to embrace the delights of the Norfolk Broads. Even with a deep keel, fixed rig yacht, it’s possible to venture (via two bridges and Mutford Lock) up stream to the River Waveney and navigate as far as Beccles road bridge, or the other way to St Olaves.

Lowestoft Beacon Marina is also popular with berth holders who live further afield want to use it as a base. There is exclusive berth-holder parking plus, the marina is within walking distance of railway st
