Star letter

LET THE MEMORY LIVE AGAIN I was reading your article about how people shopped back in 1952 (May issue) and was asking my dad about his childhood memories of that time.

His eyes lit up as he started describing individual square fruit pies that Sainsbury’s used to sell back in the day. He said they came in all different fruit flavours, were similar to round pies but ‘less fiddly and more filled’ and that you couldn’t get them anywhere other than the counter at Sainsbury’s.

My dad loves his sweet treats and, as an early morning tea treat, these made him really excited.

WRITE IN TO WIN

Our star letter writer, Andréa, wins 18 bottles of Cune Reserva. This rich red wine is ideal for summer barbecues. With aromas of bramble and spice, it pairs well with grilled red meats or flavoursome cheeses.

Cune was the first wine company in Spain to achieve the double Environmental Footprint certification for carbon and water.

PROUD HERITAGE

It was fascinating to discover in your Food Hero article (May) how Belgian Regula Ysewijn spends her life preserving British food heritage. More of us should look through this lens and stop putting our food down. As a nation we are good at embracing other foodie cultures and our lives are better for it – we just need to celebrate our own as Regula does.

NEW SHOOTS

I purchased a snake plant from my local Sainsbury’s about 18 months ago. I’ve since taken cuttings and now have three plants… and there are new growths ready to go into new pots. Talk about value for money! And something unusual has happened – two of the plants have flowered. This is a very rare occurrence and I wanted to share a pic with you.

A WHOLE NEW WORLD

Your ‘Self-raising power’ article (May) really struck a chord, reminding me of a time, pre-pandemic, where rushing around and focusing on everything but self-care was the norm. Despite the hardship of the last couple of years, the positive spin has been the opportunity to slow down. I’ve reduced commuting times and now get the right amount of sleep, and can enjoy my hobbies and focus on what matters.

Hopefully this new norm continues.
