Scientists believe upping protein may help; it’s common to lose strength during an infection and protein acts as a ‘building block’ for your body to start the recovery process, says Professor Philip Calder from the University of Southampton. Your immune system will also be in overdrive; eating lots of high-carb foods – such as oats and bread – for energ y will help it do its job.

A recent study by the University of East Anglia found that people aged 50-80 who ate a cup of cranberries per day had a better memory as well as an improved circulation of nutrients to the brain.

Eat greens daily – a recent report suggest that doing so is associated with slower cognitive decline. And make sure you load up on other colourful fruit and veg, too, as these have been shown to help boost brain health, due to the antioxidant polyphenols they contain.

Spices such as ginger, cinnamon and turmeric don’t just make food tasty – their anti-inflammatory properties might also help to lower the risk of degenerative problems.
