MAKING WAVES

A key logo to look out for when shopping sustainably is the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) logo, certifying responsible fishing and sourcing. Without increasing prices to customers, Sainsbury’s is now selling 100% MSC-certified tinned tuna across its own-label range, so the improved welfare won’t hit your wallet. It’s the first of the big four supermarkets to move to only certified line and pole-caught tuna, which has a lower environmental impact and supports local employment in the Maldives.

OCEAN BOUND

New food containers from Sistema include recycled ocean-bound plastic (OBP) waste (plastic not disposed of properly that poses a risk of polluting the ocean). With OBP estimated to generate 80% of marine plastic litter, this makes a big difference. OBP range from £5.99 (sistemaplastics.com)

3 WAYS TO… Boost your plant foods intake

Toast a mixture of sunflower, pumpkin and sesame seeds, plus perhaps some flaked almonds, in a dry frying pan until golden and starting to pop. Store in a jar, and sprinkle on soups, salads and cereal.

Instead of cooking plain rice to serve with your meal, use a mixture of rice and quinoa, or a combination of grains – a very easy variety boost.

Stir a tin of lentils or beans into a stew or pasta sauce; it makes it go further, and if you use mixed pulses, each different type counts as an extra plant food!
