Have you wondered why caps on plastic milk containers are now clear? It’s down to improving packaging recyclability by reducing colour contamination. Additionally, with milk being the third most wasted food in the UK (around 490 million pints are thrown away each year), Sainsbury’s is swapping from ‘use-by’ to ‘best-before’ dates across its own-brand milk range. The Food Standards Agency advises using sensory cues, such as the sniff test, to check if best-before foods have gone bad.

3 WAYS TO… reduce kitchen sink pipe blockages

Be conscious of how you dispose of fat; each year UK households put millions of litres of kitchen fat down the sink, with Christmas being an especially bad time (a medium-size turkey can produce almost 450ml).

Fat from grilling bacon or roasting meat should be left to solidify and scraped into the bin rather than washed down the drain.

Fat from shallow or deep-frying can be used more than once, so cool the oil, strain, and store in a jar or bottle ready to re-use, or it can be recycled at your local oil recycling point.
