Star letter

This summer began with me tending our vegetable garden. The plants grew well, harvesting started, and then an unexpected heart attack and bypass surgery rendered me unable to carry, water, dig or even pick produce. Whilst recovering, my wife continued with the garden and I offered ‘helpful’ advice. As a result, she suggested I look through Sainsbury’s magazine. Her diversion worked! The recipes enticed me to plan menus around our produce, which improved my appetite and gave me a new interest. So this is to say thank you, not just for my sanity but my wife’s too – I will be busy planning for next year’s produce now!

EMBRACING AUTUMN

As someone who struggles with the dark nights and gloom of the changing seasons, it warmed my heart to read ‘Celebrate the Season’ (October).

I now have warming recipes, leafy walks and self care planned to keep those winter blues at bay. Thanks for helping change my mindset and embrace the wonderful bounty that autumn brings. MYFI

BISCUIT MEMORIES

Wow, your article on biscuits in the September issue brought back some wonderful memories. My nan – who passed away in 1978 – used to have the tea set with the leaves on, and I remember sitting with her whilst she enjoyed her tea along with a fig roll (her favourite!).

DEMENTIA AND ME

Marianne Jones’ article on dementia (October) so resonated with me! We lost our dear mum a couple of years ago to this wretched disease. Similarly, Mum’s dementia became more apparent when we lost Dad. My sister and I tried hard to keep Mum in her own home, but eventually moved her into a care home – yes, we said for respite, too – but it became her home. We felt guilty, but while she was able she had an amazing time there – a social life, company, 24/7 care – better than we could have managed. So please don’t feel guilty – we fully believe it enhanced Mum’s life in those last years.
