STAR LETTER

A YEAR IN THE KITCHEN

I set myself a challenge at the start of 2023 to cook every recipe from the Sainsbury’s magazine wall calendar. Despite being a novice, I’m pleased to say that I not only completed but thoroughly enjoyed cooking (and eating!) every single recipe. Suffice to say, I intend to repeat the feat this year. Who knew I could make a panna cotta?!

PRETZEL WREATHS

‘I always bake treats for my colleagues to kick off the festive season. These caught my eye as they were so easy to create. I hung them on the corner of everyone’s PC and they were demolished by mid-morning!’

CLEMENTINE GIN

‘Thank goodness for this easy but magical Christmas recipe for shimmery gin! I’ve gifted it to all my gin-loving friends. And who knew that a straining jug could be so useful?!’’

I also regularly put out suet, seed blocks and sunflower seeds and, in the summer, I feed birds a homemade syrup mixture. Across the year I typically see sparrows, starlings, jays, blackbirds, swallows, goldfinches, doves and robins. I enjoy looking at them as well as listening to their sounds. I’d recommend birdwatching to anyone who needs to de-stress.

THRIFTY BUSINESS

I start Christmas shopping in January so found the article on the art of thrifty giving (December) extremely interesting. I also buy unfinished embroidery and update it: for instance, I bought six Irish linen napkins and a matching tablecloth, stamped with a design, but not embroidered. I embroidered them, made a crochet ed
