ISSUE 630 JANUARY 2024

We’ve taken a battering in the UK over the last month with countless storms, incessant wind and rainwater making fishing from the shore a real challenge and getting out on a boat nearly impossible.

However, despite the conditions it looks like there have been some superb fish being caught up and down the length of the country. It’s no secret that weather patterns play havoc with fishing but just how air pressure, wind and storms affect fish behaviour is less well understood. There are many theories but this month we focus in on how stormy weather and winds impact the behaviour of fish, and the behaviour of anglers. Dr Roger Munro uses his expert research skills to survey anglers and provides a masterclass in understanding weather patters and how they affect fish behaviour. Don’t miss his10 top tips on how to increase your catch rates in storm conditions. It’s a must-read!

This month we also look back at the life and work of Mike Millman who passed away in October. Check out our tribute to ‘the original sea angling infuencer’ starting on page 44. Anglers of many generations will have read Mike’s work, seen his pictures and fished with tackle he helped to develop over five decades. Atruly remarkable life in fishing and one of the old generations who had the ability to keep making himself relevant to the new generations of anglers all the way to the end.

BASS 2024

Later this month policy makers will be deciding on fishing measures for 2024 and all the evidence so far points towards the bag limit for bass being reduced from two to one fish per day for recreational anglers. It is frustrating to see the bag limit reduced again after a series of years of restrictions designed to rebuild the stock. However, this rebuilding was never going to be quick and in fact things have taken a turn for the worse according to the best evidence available to scientists. It may be difficult for a lot of anglers to believe after what, for many, has been the best bass
